Awards Program

From its inception in 1963, the Catawba Sail and Power Squadron has recognized the special efforts and skills of its boating members, instituting several awards programs that honor Squadron members who take their USPS Pledge, fun, and boating very seriously.

Edwin G. Young Memorial Trophy

Edwin G. Young, a General Contractor, was a business and civic leader in Rock Hill until death in 1965.  He was also a father who enjoyed boating with his family. When the Catawba Sail and Power Squadron was chartered in September 1963, Ed Young was a charter member.

In 1965, the Edwin G. Young Trophy was established by the Catawba Sail and Power Squadron in his memory. The trophy is awarded annually to the overall winner of the Squadron’s Predicted Log contest on Lake Wylie.

John C. Porter, Sr. Memorial Award

P/C John Porter, Sr., was a charter member of the Catawba Sail and Power Squadron. He was the Squadron’s first Educational Officer, serving in that capacity from 1964 until 1968. In 1968, he became the Squadron’s fourth Commander. For the entire duration of his membership, he gave heavily to the Squadron’s educational achievements.  Under his leadership, our first class of JN was graduated in 1971.  At the time of his death in 1974, he was the only member of the Squadron to have achieved the coveted N grade, and he was the Squadron’s first full certifical holder. At that time, he was teaching our first N class and was serving as Squadron Supply Officer, a position he had held since 1969.

The John C. Porter, Sr. Award was donated to the Squadron in 1974 in P/C Porter’s memory.  It is presented annually by the Commander to the outstanding member of the Squadron.
